One of the most remarkable of these Halls was the Goth Hall of Ypres, built in the 13th Century and considered the finest example of Gothic Architecture in the Country. Ypres, at that time, was among the richest and most powerful cities in Flanders and to its Cloth Hall the celebrated Flemish weavers sent the products of their looms, the finest examples being woven from imported English Wool. And to the Cloth Hall came the merchants of the world to buy the cloth. The famous Cloth Hall at Ypres was destroyed by the German Artillery in World War I and most New Zealand soldiers were familiar with its tragic ruins. The greater part of the building has since been rebuilt to its original design. In New Zealand, our “Cloth Halls” are the Drapers and Furnishers Stores, where you will find the beautiful products of our Woollen Mills. And among the finest of these are the luxurious mattresses and handsome floor rugs of Tattersfield’s Broadloom Mill. Tattersfield Broadloom Mills, Richmond, Auckland.
