P.B. ROWING CLUB PRESIDENT FOURS WON BY B. HERIVEL
Deferred from late December owing to difficulties in the supply of oars, and also to the necessity for training regatta crews, the Poverty Bay Rowing Club’s four-oar series for the president’s trophies was concluded during the week-end, when the semi-finals and the final were rowed off under good tidal conditions.
I Victory rested with a crew of young i oarsmen stroked by B. Herivel, who set ! up a high rate of stroking and fully j tested the mettle of his own crew and l of his opponents. He beat two firstclass strokes in R. Role and R. Car- , negie, finishing both his,r accs with a j decisive sprint. Results in detail were: I Semi-Final. —R. Carnegie, str., D. Menzies, F. Dearness, C. Scanlon defeated C. Waldock, str.. K. Bullivant, B. i Greatbatch and G. Habgood, by a length. B. Herivel, str.. N. Harris, M. I Hutana and J. Watt defeated P. Rofe, j str.. R. Patty. G. Smythe, D. Martin, by a short length.
Final. —Herivel, Harris, Hutana. and Watt defeated Carnegie, Menzies, Dearness and Scanlon, by a length. Crews nominated for the pair-oar series for the Menzies Cup, a competition initiated last year, are as under:— M. Varley and D. Martin, D. Tayloi and B. Lewis, H. McLeod and J. Shaskey, B. Herivel and C, Scanlon, F. Dearness and D. McKenzie, K. Bullivant and M. Hutana, C. Waldock and K Thompson: G. Smythe -nd W. Moss, G. Habgood and R. Neale, P. Rofe and J. Watt, L. Parker and R. Comber. D. Menzies and N. Barnes, R. Patty and S. Attwood, G. Hobcroft and K. Wise, G. Allen and N. Harris. This series will be rowed on Saturday, February 26. when tidal conditions should be favourable.
The Poverty Bay Rowing Club will not be represented at the New Zealand championship regatta at Karapiro. on February 26, but will send a number of crews to an open regatta to be conducted by the Naoier Rowing Club at Clive on March 26. This will probably be the final effort of Poverty Bay oarsmen for the season, although there is also a possibility of the club, with others in the East Coast Rowing Association district, sending crews to Tolaga Bay for an Easter fixture. Napier Wins at Wellington
The Napier Rowing Club lightweight four, which won at Wanganui thiee weeks ago and suffered defeat by Gisborne at Wairoa on February 5. scored a convincing win in the Wellington regatta on Saturday, defeating Petone and Aramoho by four and a half lengths and six lengths respectively. Napier also won the .iunior fours at Wellington, with the crew which accounted for Gis borne, Poverty Bay and Wairoa in the senior event at the East Coast regatta fixture a fortnight ago.
It is probable that the Gisborne and Napier lightweight crews will renew their rivalry at Karapiro. when the N.Z. championship regatta is held there on Saturday rext.
