Benefactor Gives Another £12,000 To Hawera District

(P.A.) HAWERA, Feb. 21. An amount estimated at between £12,000 and £15,000 has been bequeathed for “the cultural, educational and physical development of the people of Hawera and the surrounding district” by the late Miss Catherine Marion Buchanan, who died in Hawera on December 21.

The trustees are empowered to apply the trust fund Wholly or in part to the erection and equipment of a youth centre, museum, art gallery or other public amenity. A number o.f Dominion-wide organisations and charities with which the deceased was associated benefit by bequests totalling C 2300, which include the Presbyterian Church for its orphanages £IOOO the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union £2OO, Mission to Lepers . £SOO. British Foreign Bible Society £2OO, Overseas League £2OO and Dr. Barnardo's Homes £IOO.

The late Miss Buchanan gave £BOOO to various organisations less than two years ago and with her sister. Miss J. Buchanan. founded the Buchanan Trust for ex-servicemen of South Taranaki with a gift of £20,000 soon after the outbreak of the Second World War. More than 900 ex-servicemen have already benefitted by disbursements totallinn £13,000 The late Miss Buchanan was born in Australia. Her father, Mr Donald Buchanan later farmed with his brother. Sir Walter Buchanan, in the Wairarapa The family moved to Hawera in 1878, farming near the town. On the death of their father 36 years ago, the Misses Buchanan moved to Hawera where they have since lived.
