FASTER LOCOMOTIVES FOR GISBORNE-NAPIER TRAINS

(S.R.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 21. “Three J-class locomotives are expected to become available for transfer in a few months and will strengthen considerably the engine-power on the Napier-Gisborne railway,” said the general manager of railways, Mr. F. W. Aickin, today. Of modern design, these Scottish-built locomotives should be well suited to the heavy gradients of the Gisborne railway, being faster and more powerful than the X and AB class locomotives at present used on that line.

There have been indications recently of changes in the locomotive establishment on the Gisborne-Napier section of the East Coast main trunk line, and the announcement that J-class engines are to be transferred shortly has therefore not surprised members of the Gisborne staff of the department. With the new engines it should be possible to haul larger trains between Gisborne and Napier and return, and an increase in the speed of the service should also be possible. So far there has been no evidence of the department’s intention -to vary the existing time-table on the Gisborne-Napier section.
