VIRUS DISEASE HITS COCOA INDUSTRY

LONDON. A British Colonial Office report says that at least 50,000,000 cocoa trees, affected by a virus disease known as swollen shoot, will have to be cut out to save the Gold Coast cocoa industry. Thousands of acres already have been devastated and it is feared that unless drastic measures are taken the industry will be killed in 20 years. The disease is spreading to 15,000,000 trees a year, and only about 3,000,000 trees have been cut out. The Gold Coast Marketing Board has agreed to provide £9,000,000, accumulated from cocoa sales, for rehabilitation grants to farmers at the rate of 2s a tree. The report was drawn up by three scientists recommended by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation.
