CHINESE QUITTING BRIDGEHEADS NORTH OF YANGTSE
NANKING, Feb. 14. Tbe Chinese Nationalist forces are reported to be withdrawing from all bridgeheads along the north bank of the Yangtse east to Tsingkiang, 90 miles north-west of Shanghai. The withdrawal follows the abortive Nationalist attempt to recapture Nantung, 60 miles north-west of Shanghai. Among the bridgeheads evacuated is Wutaiokan, 35 miles north of Shanghai. Nationalist military sources, explaining the withdrawal, said as the Yangtse east of Tsingkiang was very wide the retention of sizeable forces at the north bank bridgeheads was unnecessary. Other Chinese reports said that the Communists made voluntary withdrawals in South Honan and West Hupeh, resulting in the sudden lifting of the Communist siege of the upper Yangtse ports of Ichang and Shasi. It is thought that the Communists will not be in a position to attack in strength on the Yangtse within a month, possibly two.
