ENGLAND OUT FOR 379 IN TEST : S.A. AVERTS COLLAPSE

CAPE TOWN, Feb. 14. Athol Rowan, usually one of South Africa’s safest fieldsmen, dropped a costly catch a few minutes after play began on the second day of the fourth test at Johannesburg. Watkins had added only one to his overnight total of 64 when he hooked a bumper from McCarthy to backward square leg. Rowan dropped a “sitter” and Watkins went on to make 111— his first test century—before he played back to McCarthy and trod on his wicket. He batted 220 minutes and hit 15 fours. Gladwin, Griffith and Young gave him steady support and they took the M.C.C. score to 379 before the innings ended. Incautious running by Eric Rowan cost South Africa two cheap wickets and, soon after lunch, three South African batsmen were back in the pavilion with only 19 runs scored. Nourse and Wade, however, then got on top of the attack after both had made a scratchy start and their fourth wicket stand of 106 saved South Africa from collapse. Scores:
