“FLYING DOCTOR” TO “FLYING PREMIER”
Sir Godfrey who was born in Bexley, Kent, England, was a surgeon before he entered politics and in 1911 left London where he had been medical superintendent of the Great Ormond Street Hospital and went to Southern Rhodesia, to open a private practice m Salisbury, the capital. He served in the R.A.M.C. during the 1914-1918 war and afterwards became consulting surgeon to the Salisbury Hospital and the British South Africa Police. He earned (he nickname of the “Flying Doctor from Ins frequent use of the aeroplane to visit his outlying oases. t His shrewd comments on political affairs much impressed his wide circle of friends, who prevailed on him to stand for election to Parliament in 1923 He was successful then and at every subsequent election and has been Premier of Southern Rhodesia since 1934. turning from Flying Doctor" to “Flying Premier,” to fulfil his many official engagements. The elder of liis two sons shares his father’s passion for the air and was a pilot in the R.A.F.
