SECOND EWE FAIR FINDS A STRONG DEMAND LOCALLY

Almost all of the 18,417 sheep offered at the second ewe fair at the Matavvhero saleyards yesterday were absorbed locally. There was no serious competition from outside buyers. Values, initially, were inclined to be down on those ruling last week, but they soon picked up. Top sheep were on a par with those sold last week at the opening fair of the seiies and medium sorts made full rates or were a shade dearer. Towards the end of the entry quotations appeared to decline, but quality was not in evidence. In a number of big lines it was decided to deal privately with the remainder after the final bidder had exercised his option in regard to numbers. Passings became more frequent towards the end of the fair.

For quality two-tooths 40s and up to 45s was paid for the pick of the entry and medium lambs according to condition brought from 80s to 38s. Five and six-year-old ewes came forward in good numbers and valuations between 80s and 35s were considered satisfactory for the best of the five-year ewes and 26s to 28s 3d for the tops of the older sorts. Competition was keen for lines of mixed-aged ewes with a preponderance of younger sheep. Some of the individual prices were: Two-tooth Ewes.—Seventy-one, on account of Mr. G. E.
