ICE-COLD WATER BEATS AUSTRALIAN SWIMMER

VANCOUVER. John Barry, 35-year-old Melbourne athlete, lost to Harry Kovish, a Vancouver swimmer, in a New Year's Day swim in icy-cold English Bay, Vancouver. Barry lasted 22 minutes in the water, which was only 39 deg. Kovish stayed in the water 25 minutes. Twenty-five other people, including a nine-year-old girl, all members of the local Polar Bear Club, took part in the swim.
