EXPANSION OF LOCAL BODY ACTIVITIES

(P.A.) NAPIER, Feb. 16. Local government had now reached the stage where its activities should be expanded, said the Minister of Internal ' Affairs, Mr. W. E. Parry in opening the annual conference of the Municipal Association last night. The Minister said local government activity in England was reaching out into social, recreational and cultural fields and suggested that a similar expansion' in New Zealand would be welcomed. Referring to the welcome extended to delegates by the Mayor of Napier, Mr. T. W. Hercock, the president of the association, Mr. W . Appleton, Wellington, commented that in the past 12 months more legislation affecting local government had been enacted than in any similar period in the past 20 years. Nearly 250 delegates representing 100 municipalities are atending the conference.
