SEPARATE EDUCATION FOR ABORIGINALS

DARWIN, Feb. 11. Seven aboriginal children aged between five and nine, who attended the Darwin School most of last year, were not accepted as pupils when the school year began this week. A former teacher will temporarily instruct the children in the Bagot aboriginal compound near Darwin. The Administrator of Northern Territory, Mr. A. R. Driver, said it was Government policy that full-blooded aborigines should not attend the main State schools but should be educated in their own establishments. The children had been enrolled last year through a mistake of the headmaster. Arrangements were in hand for the appointment of a teacher for the children by the Commonwealth Office of Education in Sydney. Mr. Driver added that the children seemed "quite nice” and that the results had been average. There are about 500 children, including half-castes in the Darwin School.
