AMUSEMENTS

Majestic.—Murder, against a radio background, highlighta Warner Bros.’ excellent mystery thriller, “The Unsuspected," which opens tonight at the Majestic. “The Unsuspected" is a film which keeps the audience in constant suspense. Trick camera angles reveal clues and other hints which point the finger at the unsuspected killer, but one is kept steadily guessing. Excellent featurettes complete a fine programme. King’s.—Although the name of Edgar Wallace is usually associated with detective thrillers he was also a prolific writer on horse racing. “The Calendar," which will be screened at the King’& today, sees him at his very best—a fast, thrilling, humorous story of racing. It combines all the essentials of good entertainment and brings all the colourful tradition of the British turf to the screen. The story has plenty of action, thrills, laughs, romance and stars. Greta Gynt plays the intriguing ex-fiancee of racehorse owner John McCallum, while Raymond Lovell is her wealthy, though stupid, husband whose sister, lovely starlet Sonia Holm, trainß McCallum’s horses and eventually marries him.

Regent.—You’ll yearn to be on an island with Esther Williams, Peter Lawford and Jimmy Durante when you see M.G.M.'fl tropical Technicolour musical, “On An Island With You," the current attraction at the Regent Theatre. With its all-laugh, plot highlighted by such spectacular production numbers as an underwater ballet in which aqua-star Miss Williams is seen to advantage, and some wonderful dance routines featuring Ricardo Montalbnn and Cyd Charisse, the fast-paced story revolves about a motion picture troupe on location in the Hawaiian Islands. With a song in every ecene and a thousand-and-one laughs in every reel, “On An Island With You." is more than on a par with the best in screen musicals.
