PORT OF AUCKLAND HANDLES RECORD TONNAGE
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 10. The port of Auckland' established a peacetime record for the tonnage handled in the year ended September 30. The total weight of imports and exports reached 2,513,357 tons, which was exceeded only during the peak war years, when 24-hour shifts were worked to supply the fighting forces in the Pacific. Imports reached a record of 1,882,802 tons. Exports to and imports from England increased by over 100,000 tons. Goods for America totalled 5950 tons, compared with 10,563 tons the previous year. Imports from America totalled 158,845 tons, as against 242,790 tons in 1947. Trade with Canada was about the same ratio. Exports to Australia increased by 46 per cent., whereas imports from Australia dropped 11.7 per cent.
