Australian Envoy Not Permitted To Attend Trial
CANBERRA, Feb. 10,
The Australian Ambassador to Paris was refused a visa to attend the trial of Cardinal Mindszenty, said the Minister of External Affairs, Dr. H. V. Evatt, in the House of Representatives yesterday. "This fact and the trial itself established a prima facie case of miscarriage or possible miscarriage of justice,” he added. “I have been informed that it is proposed to bring this matter before the United Nations General Assembly at its adjourned meeting in New York in a few months “I can assure Parliament that Australia regards the Mindszenty case as a matter of great importance because, if things of this character occur anywhere in the world, especially where treaty obligations seem to be involved, it is a threat to freedom everywhere. It seems to me to involve a general question of rights guaranteed under the treaty of peace with Hungary, to which Australia is a party.” He added that on six occasions a visa to attend the trial was promised the Australian Ambassador to Paris, but that when'the time came it was not forthcoming.
