PANIC RUSH NOT JUSTIFIED : SUGAR SUPPLIES FAIR
On behalf of the Gisborne Master Grocers’ Association a statement was issued todav to the effect that stocks of sugar held by retailers in Gisborne were sufficient to meet normal requirements of customers. Panic buying has developed since publication of a message from Auckland stating that the Colonial Sugar Company was not accepting orders until stocks were re-built, following recent depletions. A representative of the Master Grocers' Association said today that people now gather to await the opening of shops, in order to lodge individual orders far exceeding their'normal consumption. “If a shortage' develops it will be because some members of the public are rushing to put sugar on their shelves,” he added. “Retailers in Gisborne have been able to meet normal requirements to date, and even to meet orders for bag lots; but since the rush of inflated orders began to flow in, directly after the publication of the Auckland message and comment on the short deliveries *to Gisborne, we have had to put restrictions upon customers.”
