Regent.—Tropical in tempo and temperature is the romance between Esther Williams and Peter Lawford in M.G.M.'a teehnicolour musical, "On An Island With you,” which commences today. Also featured are Ricardo Moutulbau, Jimmy Durante, dancing Cyd Charisse and Xavier Cugat and his orchestra. —Majestic.—"Roses Are Red” and "Adventures in Silverado”conclude at the Majestic today. A clever mystery drama packed with thrills, "The Unsuspected” (starting tomorrow at 8 p.m.) stars Claude Rains, as a radio mystery story teller who plans more diabolical murders than those in his stories in an endeavour to get the fortune of his attractive ward, Joan Caulfield. His scheming is ultimately upset by the promising new actor, Michael North, who realises that several apparent suicides are really cleverly concealed murders. King's.—Although the name of Edgar Wallace is usually associated with detective thrillers he was also a prolific writer on horse racing. "The Calendar,” which will be screened at the King's today, sees him at his very best —a fast, thrilling, humorous story of racing. It combines all the essentials of good entertainment and brings all the colourful tradition of the British turf to the screen. The story has ■ plenty of action, thrills. laughs, romance and stars. Greta Gynt plays the intriguing ox-fiancee of racehorse owner John McCallum, while Raymond Dovell is her wealthy, though stupid, husband whose sister, lovely starlet Sonia Holm, trains McCallum’s horses and eventually marries him. Toilerton Variety Show.—A "dinkum Aussie” even to the bronze buttons of his service uniform is one of the stars of the Tollerton variety show, “Nice Goings On,” opening at the Opera House oil February 17. Eric Cameron is the name and the honoured title he carries is that of the "Tobruk Rat.” He served in that famous siege of 1941, and on February 17 he brings to Gisborne many of the army classics so popular with Diggers and Kiwis of the Second World War. With him appear such stars of the English and Australian stage ns "Dinks” Patson, Trixie Ireland, "Bud” Budden, Thelma Carn. "Babs” MacKinnon, Alien Van and George Toilerton.
