Southland Builders Are Erecting Over 100 Houses

(P A.) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 10. In connection with the statement of the Minister of Works, Mr. R. Semple, that 14,000 houses will be erected in New Zealand this year, it is reported that 89 Southland builders are constructing more than 100 houses in the province and 41 houses have been con traded for. In addition. 53 houses are being constructed by 61 Rehabilitation Department trade trainees. On November 30 last 143 houses were under construction by 89 builders. Twenty-seven of the houses were to be completed in one month from that time, 56 in two months, 23 in three months, 10 in four months, 12 in five months, 10 in six months, and 25 in seven months. This construction included State houses. On September 30, 1947, 36 builders had 136 houses under construction. Builders were held up then with shortages of plaster, wallboard, cement, timber. bricks, baths and ranges. Today shortages of cement and steel are the main cause of delay. On November 18, 1946, 113 partlyconstructed houses were held up by similar shortages. Forty-two builders were then engaged in constructing bouses.
