Timber Miller Fined For Obstructing Maori Land Officer
(P.A.) WHANGAREI, Feb. 11. A fine of £25 was imposed on Arthur Stanley Winger, a timber miller, of Kaikohe, when he faced a charge before the Kaikohe Magistrate’s Court that he obstructed a Maori Land Board officer in the execution of a warrant lawfully issued by the Maori Land Court. The sub-warrant authorised John Latta, the Maori Affairs Department supervistor at Kaikohe. to seize a number of logs lying in Winger’s mill yard. They had been unlawfully cut and removed from native property. Winger, when ordered to give up the logs, replied he would not do so until money thatt, he said, was owing had been paid. The magistrate, giving judgment, said that whether the Maori Land Court was right or wrong, its orders must be obeyed. One remedy then to those who objected to an order was to use the regular machinery for appeal from the judge’s decision.
