N.Z. CANNED FOOD FOR BRITAIN: £900,000 ORDER

(P.A.) HASTINGS, Feb. 10. The New Zealand canning industry is to supply the United Kingdom Avith approximately £900,000 worth of canned foodstuffs.

r This was announced by Mr. J. Wattle, (Hastings, president of the New Zealand and Vegetable Canning Federation, yesterday, when intimating that he had received advice that the British Treasury had authorised the expenditure of this amount.

The greater part of the order, said Mr. -Wattie. would .comprise tomato progreen peas and soups. Preparations in anticipation of the ordeiiwere made months ago. Already supplies had been coming to hand and for same months the canning industry would! be kept fully occupied in meietirlg the order, which would be placedi throughout the industry in New Zealand. Included in the order is a special fruit spread, which has been developed by the local canning industry for the English market. “No fruits will be exported from New Zealand under this contract,” said Mr. ■ Wattie, “for the reason that there are insufficient stone fruits grown in this country even to meet the local market requirements.”
