Cyclist Fined Michael Victor Anderson, who did not appear, was fined 5s with 10s costs, when charged in the Magistrate’s Court at Gisborne yesterday with riding his bicycle without a light in Peel street on January 26. Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M. was on the Bench. Food Parcels For Britain The Norfolk, from Wellington with 27,885 parcels weighing 273,8701 b. on board, arrived in Britain on January 31. This shipment comprised postings made throughout the southern half of the North Island and the Gisborne and Nelson districts during the period December 3-29. the districts of Canterbury, Marlborough and West Coast during the period December 2nd-27, and throughout Otago and Southland from December 3-22. Deserting Seaman Convicted , A seaman who deserted from the overseas liner, Ruahine, when she was at Wellington in December 1947, appeared in the Magistrates Court at Gisborne yesterday. He was Henry John McCarthy (Mr. L. T. Burnard), who pleaded guilty to deserting an overseas vessel. Senior Sergeant Norris said that McCarthy had married in Wellington after deserting and had corns to Gisborne where he had been working for some months. Nothing was known against him by the po’ice. McCarthy was convicted and ordered te come up for sentence if called upon within six months and to pay costs ol 10s bv Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M.
