PLAN FOR BRITISH NATIONAL THEATRE ON THAMES

LONDON, Jan. 21. The financial secretary to the Treasury. Mr. Glenvil Hall, today moved in the House of Commons the second reading of the National Theatre Bill, which provides for the erection in London at the cost of £1,000,000 a building containing two theatres, one seating 1200 people and the other 500. Mr. Glenvil Hall said it was time that the land which gave birth to the greatest dramatist' the world had yet seen should have its own national theatre and, although there was a sharp division of opinion on the extent to which the State should interfere in the national life, the Government felt that this would be an occasion when the State should come to the assistance of the arts.

He said the theatre would be built on the south bank of the Thames and would include theatre workshops, conference rooms, and a library. It would be a centre for the development of dramatic art. Mr. Glenvil Hall said he would like to see many, of the seats sold at 6d each and the others at reasonable prices.
