JAPANESE ELECTIONS WITHOUT INCIDENT
(11 a.m.) TOKYO, Jan. 23. The Japanese finished voting tonight in a quiet election of the new House of Representatives.
The voting was comparatively heavy in rural areas and light in the cities. In the past the rural vote has been predominantly Conservative, but leftist parties conducted their strongest campaign in the farm areas, this time, exploiting the rural unrest developing from unfavourable economic conditions. Before the polls opened the extremely Conservative “Democratic Liberal and “Democratic” parties openly discussed plans for a coalition Government on the assumption that they would control the majority of the 466 seats in Parliament. It is ejected that the trend of the voting will be indicated by tomorrow.
