Prominent Indonesians Arrested By Dutch
(9 a.m.) BATAVIA, Jan. 23. Making use of the special powers which he wields because Java technically has been under a state of siege since 1940, the Dutch territorial commander of West Java yesterday ordered the arrest of four prominent Indonesians in Bandoeng. Among them was the chairman of the Republican Party in the Parliament of the Federal State of Pasundan.
In a proclamation announcing the arrests, Major-General Engles did not give the charges against those arrested, but said that the arrests were ordered because the Pasundan Government, despite his urging, had not taken the necessary measures to preserve security. Major-General Engles added that he would not hesitate to take sterner maasuras ii necessary.
