WOMAN’S ESCAPE FROM MIDNIGHT ASSAILANT
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH,\Jan. 24. A Christchurch woman's resource and presence of mind saved her from probably serious injury when she was attacked in her flat by an unknown man shortly after midnight on Thursday. The woman, who occupies a fiat in Cashel street, was awakened about half an hour after midnight, something having disturbed her. A man was in her bedroom, but before she could call out the man, apparently realising that she was awake forced her back 'on the bed and pressed a hand over her mouth.
She struggled fiercely and eventually pushed his hand away. She screamed for help and was heard by the occupiers of the next fiat, one of whom called to her. The assailant made off. He was chased by a man from one of the other flats, but got away. When the woman, accompanied by this neighbour, went to a nearby slot telephone to notify the police they could get no response, and it was found that the telephone flex had been cut. A roll of wide adhesive tape, which it is thought was intended to be used as a gag. a rubber shoe and pieces of rubber glove were found in the bedroom. The pieces of rubber glove were torn off in the struggle.
