Deadlock In EgyptianIsraeli Peace Talks
(11 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 21. A disagreement over the future of the Egyptian-held coastal strip at Gaza has caused a deadlock in the Israeli-Egyptian armistice talks, according to well-informed sources quoted by Reuter’s correspondent on Rhodes.
Israel is said to be demanding'* that the Egyptians vacate Xegev completely, including the Gaza area, but the Egyptians are believed to be standing out for a United Nations’ trusteeship of the coastal strip pending a final peace settlement. They are also reported to be demanding a plebiscite in the area to allow the inhabitants to decide to which country they prefer to belong. The reports of a disagreement over the control of Negev may delay Britain’s announcement that she will recognise the Israeli Government, says Router’s diplomatic correspondent. The target date for the announcement was January 24—the eve of the first Israeli general elections. British recognition was to be accompanied by a goodwill gesture from the United States.'
