Evatt Praises Truman’s Work For Peace

(9 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 22. Australia's foreign policy was to support the United Nations and act at all times in accordance with its principles and charter, said the Minister of External Affairs, Dr. H. V. Evatt, addressing 'a luncheon meeting arranged by the United Nations’ Association of Australia.

Twice in 35 years Australia had been involved in war which had its immediate origin far from her shores. That was why Australia was directly concerned in all situations which might endanger peace wherever they occurred.

The United Nations’ aim of raising living standards was of direct concern to every Australian. The immediate cause of the last depression was something which lay beyond Australian shores. The Commonwealth Government today planned to forestall a future depression and had taken a lead to advocate international planning and actions to prevent a depression. Paying a tribute to President Truman, Dr. Evatt said he was one of the greatest supporters of the United Nations and had fought hard for world peace, world justice and better living standards. !
