WATCH FOR “FLIRTS, MASHERS, WOLVES"
NEW YORK. Nine pretty girls, each expert in judo and each carrying a revolver in her handbag, have been assigned by the New York police department to put an end to what the police call “flirts, mashers and wolves” on the city's underground railways. This action has been taken following an increasing number of complaints of “disgraceful goings on” in crowded underground trains and stations. Complaints were that men had caught hold of unattached women and tried to kiss or fondle them.
So now a fashionally-dressed, pretty girl demurely hanging on to a strap in a packed home-going train might, in response to advances from a man passenger, may pull out a pistol or throw him over her shoulders.
