Burmese Cabinet Resigns Because Of Widespread Unrest
(10 a.m.) RANGOON, Jan. 20. The Prime Minister, Thakin Nu, has tendered his Cabinet’s resignation to the President. An official announcement said that the Cabinet had decided to resign “in view of the worsening situation, brought about by the present countrywide insurrection.” Thakin Nu. the announcement added, would form a new Cabinet with the smallest possible number of Ministers.
An earlier message states that an emergency session of the Cabinet was held following the return last night of Thakin Nu from frontier areas where he spent two weeks. Cabinet discussions were centred on four important questions, first, the mounting Karen-Burmese tension following the recent disturbances in Southern Burma, secondly, the rapprochement between the Government and the White Band left-wing People’s Volunteer Organisation; thirdly, the economy drive to tide over the threatening financial crisis; fourthly, the threatened nationwide strike by Government employees as a protest against the reduction of cost of living allowances.
