Partly Derailed Railcar Escapes Disaster
(P.A.) GREYMOUTH. Jan. 21. Only the fact that the Christchurchbound railcar was travelling at a moderate speed along a curved section of the railway line three-quarters of a mile on the Greymouth side of Stillwater early last evening saved the 35 passengers and crew of two from disaster.
Soon after leaving Brunner tunnel, the railcar's front bogey wheels left the line and trailed for a distance of 43 feet before being pushed further oil the line by a bolted section of the rails. ' The railcar travelled another 117 ft. before being brought to a standstill on a 66ft. bridge with the left front wheel suspended almost over the ouside of the sleepers. Although the railcar was strained and had subsequently to be taken in tow to Stillwater, no extensive structural damage was done and none of tha passengers suffered injury. The passengers were taken to Stillwater by bus and rejoined another railcar from Westpport, leaving about 70 minutes late for Christchurch. Incoming passengers from Westport and Reefton were conveyed to Greymouth by a road services bus and the railcar was replaced on the line three hours later.
