CLUB TENNIS CHALLENGE FOR WILLIAMS SHIELD

The Mangapapa Tennis Club representatives are to defend the H, B. Williams Shield on Saturday against the challenge of the Metropolitan club. Since gaining the shield from Tolaga Bay early in the season, the Mangapapa players have held off a challenge by the Gisborne club B team. Further challenges have been lodged by the Kia Ora and Tokomaru Bay clubs. Teams submitted to the match committee for handicapping for shield play are:

Sullivan. The holders of the Miller Stars. D Gray and D. Coutts. are to meet L. Morrow and J. K. Burns in a challenge match at the Kia Ora club courts on January 29. Gisborne-Tc Karaka Match

This week-end a visiting team from Te Karaka will endeavour to reverse the decision gained by the Gisborne B team at Te Karaka last, month. Flay is to commence on the Gisborne courts at 9.30 a.m.

The next inter-association fixture in the district is the match between Poverty Bay-East Coast and Hawke’s Bay to be played on the courts of the Gisborne club on February 12 and 13. The committee is endeavouring to arrange for accommodation for approximately 1(1 visiting players and supporters who can give assistance are invited to advise the association president. Mr. D. Richardson or the secretary. Mr. T. A. Williams. The Hawke’s Bay match is 1o bo followed in March with that with Bay of Plenty, postponed from last week. Negotiations are being made also for a match in Gisborne with a Hutt Valley team in March and a visit by G.

Robson and top-ranking Auckland players during February. During the first two weeks of February, a group of new tennis films, including one in technicolour featuring play by J. Kramer, are being made available to the association and public and school screenings are planned.
