Bishop Bans Bathing Beauty Parades
(By Airmail.) SYDNEY. Girls in the Roman Catholic diocese of Maitland, New South Wales, have been forbidden .by Bishop Gleeson to take part in bathing beauty exhibitions, which, he said, “reduce girls and young women to the level of livestock.” At all services in the Cathedral parish of the diocese recently the Bishop’s direc|ion was read. Bishop Gleeson declared: “Such exhibitions where girls, clad only in swimming costumes, parade themselves before the curious gaze of all and sundry, are certainly immoral, degrading and pagan. Catholic parents and Catholic girls should be alive to the dignity of womanhood and neither approve nor assist at nor take part in exhibitions which reduce girls and young women to the level of livestock.” —Reuter.
