“MORE SENSIBLE” MARKET FOR WOOLLY WETHER LAMBS

(P.A.) HASTINGS. Dec. 23 What was described as a more sensible market existed for woolly wctnei lambs at the Stortford Lodge stock sale yesterday when this class of stock again made up the bulk of the entry of 10,000 head. For better class woolly lambs values showed a tendency to ease. Shorn lines made dearer buying than woollies. Although the market was inclined to be a little erratic all round, it was sound, with values still favouring vendors. Other classes of sheep, which were in short supply, also sold well. Yesterday's sale ,vas the last of the year and was confined to store stock, the fat market having been satisfied on Tuesday. The sheep sale attracted a good attendance of buyers, who operated steadily, but only a handful of buyers followed the sale of 200 head of store c attic. Good woolly wether lambs changed hands at from 2Rs to 30s 7d. medium sorts making to 265. and small up to 21s (id. Values for shorn wether lambs made from 2Gs to 28s lOd. Southdown cross lambs in the wool ranged from 29s to 32s 6d. with inferior sorts at 245. The top price was paid for a meaty line of shorn ewe lambs, which brought 2Gs Gd. Two-tooth wethers made from 25s 3d to 345; with older sorts from 34s 7d to 33s 2d. Two-tooth ewes were passed in at 40s Gd and 43s Interest in the store cattle offering was limited. Largely, the yarding was a nondescript one. with few pens of any size. The small attendance of farmers treated them accordingly. All the larger lines consisted of female cattle, for which there was a reasonable inquiry. Cows and calves changed hands at from £ll 2s Gd to £l2, and empty cows from £9 12s to £lO. one line being passed in at £ll Is. Small yearling steers brought £4 10s. and two-year heifers off hard country were quit at £7 16s.
