ASSAULT ON GIRL ALLEGED: MAORI TO STAND TRIAL
Pleading not guilty to a charge of indecent assault on a female at Barryville, in the Rotorua district on March 22, a 26-year-old Maori, Patrick Warren, was committed for trial in the Supreme Court at Gisborne following the hearing of evidence by Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., -in the Police Court yesterday. Mr. J. S. Wauchop appeared for the accused and Detective-Sergeant R. H. Waterson prosecuted. An incident following a party at the home of her parents at Barryville on the night of March 21 and in the early hours of the following morning were related by a 14-year-old girl. Evidence was also given by the girl’s father, who said that following his complaint, to the police, the accused had left the district. Witness had next seen the accused in Gisborne in October and had reported this to the police. A statement made by the accused, in which he allegedly admitted assaulting the girl, was produced by Constable E. Jones. Bail of £IOO on his own recognisance with one surety of similar amount was allowed by the magistrate who ordered the accused to report weekly to the police.
