31 LIVES LOST IN CHINESE PLANE DISASTER
(11 a.m.) HONG KONG, Dec. 21. At least 31 persons were killed when a China National Aviation Corporation Skymaster crashed and was burned out on Basalt Island, 40 miles off Hong Kong.
The plane left Shanghai this morning for Hong Kong.
The water police told Reuter’s correspondent that they picked up 31 bodies, all badly mangled beyond recognition. Two are unaccounted for as the corporation announced that the plane carried 33.
A search plane sighted the wreckage and a fire and the Hong Kong Government dispatched police launches to the scene.
The police reported finding the burned out wreck on Basalt Island and no evidence of survivors. This is the worst air disaster as far as casualties are concerned recorded in Hong Kong. While no passenger list is available it is unlikely that foreigners were aboard.
