CABBAGE PATCH TO BE DUG IN: PRICE UNECONOMIC

While cabbages are being quoted retail at 3d per lb. and are being marked up at from -Id to lOd each, growers are finding it uneconomic to cut them for the market. Growers are quoted 2s fid to 3s per sack of from 20 to 40 cabbages Markets beyond Gisborne also apparently are glutted and there is no other outlet for the crop. “Tomorrow, ( I am going to plough in fiOOO cabbages because it does not pay me to cut them and market them for a return of only a few farthings each.” said n Gisborne commercial grower today: “The over-supply is not reflected in the prices being charged to the public,” he commented. It would pay him better to turn them into the ground and waste no more time with them. There is now no Government control on the price of cabbages. They were included among the vegetables upon which price controls were lifted a month or two ago.
