“BEER AND SYMPHONY MUSIC DON’T MIX”
Beer and symphony music don't mix, the State authorities at Detroit have spent 10.000 dollars building a beer garden where audiences could enjoy drinks and music. But the State authorities promptly ruled the scheme out of order because it was “undignified” and might harm children. The Symphony’s president, millionaire inrustrialist Henry Reichhold, says he'll “be hanged if he’ll let the bureaucrats get away with it.” “Beer goes with symphony music in Vienna, the capital city of symphony music.” he insists. Arthur Fiedler, director of Boston's famed concerts, said prim and proper Boston sees nothing sinful in taking its music with a seidel of beer or a tassie of wine. “We have been serving beer and light wines at concerts for 64 years, with no unpleasant result,” he said. “Its very pleasant to sit comfortably, listen to music well played, and have beer or a little wine and a smoke.” “We don’t have to be straightlaced about music.”
