Bookies’ Bustle Missed
What an English visitor most misses on the racecourse here is the colour and bustle of the bookmakers, said Mr. A. S. Black an electrical engineer, now on holiday in New Zealand. The tracks here are much better, and everyone is able to see all of the race, whereas in England horses disappear “into the blue” for a considerable part of the race. Admission charges are much cheaper. Mr. Black instanced how he would have had to pay £3 at Ascot to get into the granstand compared with the 7s he paid at Riccarton —and Riccarton’s appointments were superior in his view, to Ascot's.
