OVER 300 DEAD AND HUNDREDS MISSING IN BRAZIL FLOODS
(11 a.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 17. Over 300 persons are known to be dead, hundreds are missing, and thousands are homeless in the wake of floods which have swept through 1200 square miles of low-lying country in Eastern Brazil.
Steady rain for 15 days was followed by a cloudburst two days ago over the States of Rio de Janeiro and Minasgcrais. Officials have been unable to assess the full flood casualties and damage. Over 170 bodies have been recovered
in the Padua area. Rio de Janeiro State, and 140 at Lcopoldina, southeastern Minasgerais. Rescuers are hampered by wrecked bridges and washed-out roads and railways, which are naralysing communications.
