Englishmen Flay South Africans’ Bowling: Rain Stops Play

(10.50 a.m.) DURBAN. Dec. 17. Rain prevented England from pressing home their advantage in the first test cricket match against South Africa.

When England was 14$ for two —17 short of South Africa’s first innings score—rain stopped play for the day.

Hutton and Washbrook, with an opening partnership of 84 gave England a good start. Washbrook was ultra cautious, but Hutton was brilliant. Four times in one over he drove the ball through the covers to the boundary. After the last of these hits the ball had to be replaced. It struck the fence with such force that it was knocked out of shape. Hutton and Compton were batting most confidently when rain stopped play in mid-afternoon. Scores: —

ENGLAND First Innings Hutton, not out Washbrook, c Wade, b Mann ,. .. 35 Simpson, c Begbie, b Mann .. .. 5 Compton, not out Extras .. 6 Total, for two wickets .. .. 144
