Ear Disease Rife In Britain
(10 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 17. Estimating that 2,500,000 people—s per cent of the population—suffer from ear disease, a leading article in the British Medical Journal this -week calls for an organised scheme for treatment.
The journal publishes an account of a survey carried out by the Medical Research Council in seven factories in the Birmingham area over a period of 18 months.
Of the 1902 employees selected at random over 20 per cent were suffering or had been suffering from ear disease. Perhaps the most important finding of all is that daily treatment can be continued over many weeks without time off from work. Many chronic cases were due to neglect arising, in large part, from the patient’s inability for economic reasons to attend regularly for treatment at the doctor’s surgery.
