MOVING ABOUT Mr. and Mrs. Percy Hamilton, Stout street, have left for Masterton and will be away for several weeks. Miss Marjorie Fearon, Cook Hospital, leaves this week-end for a holiday at her home in New Plymouth. Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Thomas, with Miss D. Thomas and Master D. Thomas, left on Thursday for their home at Hicks Bay after spending a few days in Gisborne. Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Shcrratt. Hangaroa, are staying at the Gisborne Hotel until Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Neil Priest, Plicks Bay, who have been the guests of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Tomlinson, “Braeburn,” have returned home. Miss Olive Crawford, Stafford street, is spending four or five months’ holiday away from Gisborne. She will be visiting Rotorua. Hamilton and Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. ,7. Brownlie, Te Araroa, who spent a few days at the Gisborne Hotel this week returned home on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. R. McNichol, Wanganui, and Miss J. R. McNichol, Scotland, are visiting Mrs. D. Macnab, Mangapapa. Miss June McGregor leaves Gisborne next Thursday for Auckland and on Boxing Day will fly to Sydney on her way to the Pan-Pacific Scout Jamboree at Melbourne, which commences at the end of December. Miss McGregor is a County Club Commissioner. Mr. Norman Bluck, a Nuhaka Scouter, also travels to Australia on the same day. Mrs. G. L. McLean, Wellington, has arrived in Gisborne to spend three weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Smith, Matthew road. She is accompanied by her two children and hexnephew, Master Anthony Meria, who will spend the school holidays with his grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Smith.

Miss Marili Clapcott, L. T. C. L., L. R. S. M., formerly of Woodford House music staff, is retui-ning to reside in Gisborne after having spent several years teaching music in Australia and also studying music and pianoforte technique at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music. Miss Clapcott was directress of music at sturt, a cultural and crafts centre in Mittagong, for two years. Today Mrs. A. Pufllet, Gisborne, left for a visit to Hawke’s Bay. She will be the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Allan, Waipawa. Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Humphreys, Wilencote, Ngatapa, returned home yesterday after visiting the South Island. Dr. Shirley Robertson, Wellington, is at present staying with her mother, Mrs. A. M. Robertson, Clifford street. Yesterday Miss M. Wells, Canterbury, arrived in Gisborne. She is the guest of her sister, Mrs. P. 11. Sherratt, Hangaroa.

Mrs. A. S. Muir, Harris street, Kaiti, left Gisborne today to visit her daughter, Mrs. P. Whitlock, Palmerston North.

Last Wednesday Mrs. L. Jex-Blake, Mangapoike, accompanied by her son and daughter, returned home after a short visit to Hawke’s Bay and Wanganui. Mr. and Mrs. 0. T. Williams, Titiraukena, Ruatoria, have been spending a few days in Gisborne. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Wood and Miss Joy Wood, Lottin Point, Te Araroa, have returned from Hawke's Bay. Mi's. H. Thatcher, Ruatoria, paid a brief visit to Gisborne this week. Mrs H. Carleton Williams, Sherwood, Muriwai, has returned home after a visit to the Wairarapa. Mrs. C. P. Sherratt, Hangaroa, has been spending a few days in Gisborne this week. Last week-end Miss E. McGhee, Harris st„ Kaiti, returned home after visiting Auckland.

Last Tuesday Miss D. Gaddum, Mohaka, returned home after paying a visit, to Hawke’s Bay.

Mrs. Davy, Wellington, who has been the guest of Mrs. L. Evans, Russell street, has departed for Hamilton and Auckland.

Mr. and Mrs George Chrisp, Harris street. Kaiti, returned to Gisborne last week-end after visiting Auckland. Mrs. R. Bush, Ohakca, arrived in Gisborne this week.

Miss Peggy Burnett, Kaharau, Ruatoria, was a recent visitor to Hawke',» Bay.

Mr. and Mrs. M. J. McArtney, Kaiti esplanade, have left for a holiday at Whanarua Bay, where they will be for several weeks.

Mrs. D. Busby, Rahiri, Tokomaru Bay, has returned home after a short visit to Gisborne.

Mrs. N. Perston. Waipawa, Miss Valerie Lockwood, Wellington and Mr. Donald Lockwood. jAuckland, are spending Christmas holidays with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. G. Lockwood, Bloomfield road.

COMING-OF-AGE Following a buffet dinner given by Miss E. Bonighton, some 50 guests were entertained at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. P. Meredith, Aberdeen road recently to celebrate the coming-of-age of their daughter, Miss Bette Meredith. Among the guests were visitors from Palmerston North and Napier. BROWNIE FESTIVITIES

Twenty-six Brownies of the Turanganui pack gathered for a Christmas party at the Parish Hall on Thursday from four o’clock until six, playing games and listening to piano solos by the pack leader, Beverley Carter, and Miss Shirley Carter.

There was a party tea, attended by the divisional Guide commissioner, Mrs. J. S. Nugent, who was presented with a bouquet by Nancy Sparrow. This Brownie also thanked the pack Brown Owl, Miss Hester Macnab, for the party.

YOUNG MOTHERS’ CIRCLE

A Christmas party at the home of Mrs. W. Nolan, Northcote road, was given on Wednesday by the committee of the Young Mothers' Fireside Circle. Gladioli, carnations, cinerarias and hydrangeas in pinks and purples made a charming floral background, together with coloured streamers and a Christmas tree complete with balloons, gifts and a fairy at the top. Following the distribution of gifts, Mrs. Corbett presented Mrs. Nolan with a handsome piece of china, an indication of the esteem of members, who joined in musical honours. After thanking the company, Mrs. Nolan presented the committee with a "bouquet" of sweets, saying that no partv cm.id be a success without a good committee. Community singing and several competitions, the winners being Mesdames Stcnner, Braithwaite and Henderson, were enjoyed. A delicious home-made supper was served and a bright evening concluded with “Auld Lang Syne.” Hostesses were Mesdames Nolan, Corbett, Freeman, Dowell, Croker and C. Huston, LITTLE THEATRE PLAYS The final reading for the year by the Little Theatre Society was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening, when two one-act plays were presented. The first play, presented by members of the sixth form of the High School was J. M. Barrie’s ‘‘Shall We Join the Ladies?” and the students were to be congratulated on the detail in the staging. Those reading were Nerissa Hughes. Alan Revell. Joy Crawford. David Blackburn, Valetta Pasely, Jane Scott, Quentin Kemp, Denis Kohn, Lynetlc Lewis, Janice Oman, Peter Rule, Barbara Tarr, David Thain, Annette Stephens, Neil Moss and Lorraine Tucker.

The second play, Phillip Johnson’s comedy “Heaven on Earth,” presented by society members, was staged by Mrs. R.. F. Daniels. The readers were Mrs. E. Heighway, Miss I. Sutton, Messrs, G. Broom and G. Forrester. The secretary, Mr. A. L. Chalmers, thanked those present for their support during 1978. Mr. Gordon Forrester congratulated the committee' members on their efforts during productions and readings. CLUB’S CHRISTMAS PARTY Practically all members of the Gisborne Women's Club were at the club rooms for the Christmas party on Wednesday evening and met in an appropriately festive atmosphere, created by seasonal decorations, including holly, and a profusion of flowers arranged by the gardening circle. Mrs N. -Hooper took the chair and welcomed the guests with seasonal greetings. Sprays were presented to the three vice-presidents, Mesdames Hooper, R V. Lyndon and H. Maynard by Mrs R. Hepburn, secretary of the gardening circle. Many telegrams were read from former and absent members. Items were contributed as follows: Songs, Mesdames Marsicano and T. H. Berry; violin solos, Mrs. A. E. Elliott; piano solos, Mrs. I. J. Quigley; recitation. Mrs. T. Kane; Christmas sketch. Mrs. N. Hooper. Mesdames Elliott and T. H. Berry were the accompanists. A one-act play. ‘Grandmothers are so Simple,” produced by Mrs. Hooper with Mesdames A. E. Legge, Maynard, G. S. Vincent and Blunt as the players, was popular. It was followed by an extract from Dickens’ “Old Curiosity Shop”— “Jarley’s Waxworks.” This was produced by Mrs. Clement, the performers being Mesdames Clement, Blunt, V. Walworth, Sutcliffe. R. L. Gray and Diane South, and caused a good deal of merriment.

Christmas carols were also sung by the assembly, accompanied by Mrs. Berry at the piano and Mrs. Elliott with the violin.

Supper, served by the committee, included a Christmas cake donated by Mesdames Maynard and E. P. Widdowson.

A Christmas gift to the club of a cushion was made by Mrs. Clements, convener of the literary circle.

TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

The Bright Street Methodist Hall was the assembly place of the Townswomen's Guild for the year's final meeting, which was in the form of a Christmas party. Members had used gladioli, hydrangeas and carnations with charming effect on the stage and a Christmas tree held pride of place. The president, Mrs. R. H. Robinson, opened the meeting with the New Zealand national anthem and the Guild Ode.

The Dominion delegate, Mrs. B. Wilson, presented Mesdames R. Robinson, Mrs, Holland, secretary, and Mrs. Barker with floral tributes. Mesdames Lange, Wood, Scott, Wilson and Gordon were given floral sprays by the president.

The social committee took charge of the programme and opened with a “crazy hat parade.” This caused great amusement, there being a wide selection of entries. Miss Mavis Wood was the winner- Varied items included the following: Songs, the singing circle, Miss M. Wood and Mr. Davidson: song and tap dance, Dorothy McNicol; recitation. Mrs. N. Hooper; sketches by the dramatic circle, including “Washing Day," with Mesdames Wilson and Holland, “Grandma Goes to Vote” with Mesdames Lange, Halliwell and Wood, and “Ministering Angels” by Mesdames Wilson, Davidson and A. E. Legge; Christmas sketch, members of the singing circle, the soloists being Mesdames Halliwell, Soderson, Darling and Wood, and other players Mesdames Lord and Worsfold. Mrs. N. Gordon was the pianist and Mr, Owen Pritchard led community singing. Mesdames Bayly and Clement were the hostesses and supper was served by committee members. A reminder concerning nominations for the election of officers at the next meeting in February was given. Competitions were won by Mesdames Cornelius and E. Henderson. “Auld Lang Syne” was the concluding feature of the programme. WHITE Clean Soft Tissue Paper placed between layers of clothes helps to prevent crushing and protects against dust. The Daily Round

FINAL CARD EVENING First prize-winners at the Mangapapn branch of the National Party's final pro. gressive five hundred card evening on Tuesday night were Mcsdames K. Smith, E. Hills and M. Paine, who were equal in the Women’s section, and Mr. S. Gallop. Other prizes went to Mesdarnes Ladd, M. Thomas. C. Colo and Howchow and the monthly aggregate to Mrs. E. Hills and Mr. S. Gallop. There were 11 tables occupied and Mr. G. Torrie supervised the play. Supper was served by the social committee. SCOTTISH CAKE ARRIVES A pice of cake sent to the Knox Young Wives’ and Mothers’ Club from a parish in Aberdeen to which Gisborne members send food parcels, was received at the last meeting, which was an endof-thc-year social. Members learnt that the Aberdeen residents concerned had each donated part of their rations in order to make the cake and a piece had been given to Mrs. Carrington-Welby. who happened to be in Scotland at the time, for the Knox Club as a "thank you" for food parcels sent. Appreciation of the gift of the cake was expressed by members, wno duly sampled and enjoyed it. The meeting was held at Mr. McLean’s home in Gladstone road. Competition winners were Mcsdames E. Trowel], I. Crafts. B. Ritchie and G. Ferguson. Community singing was enjoyed.

Floral sprays were given to Mrs. I-I. Dyson, president, and retiring officers who were Mcsdames Redstone and Knox, vice-presidents, Bacon, secretary, Lyndon, treasurer, Ferguson, reporter, and to Mrs. McLean, who had loaned her house for meetings and who was thanked for her hospitality.

Mrs. C. Walsh, a new member, was welcomed. It was was decided to hold a social in the church on the second Wednesday in February and members were reminded that food parcels should be brought to that meeting, and that the church parade would be held this Sunday.
