Suggested Bonus for Wives
A suggestion that wives of faultsmen employed by the board should be granted a Christmas bonus for their part in answering the telephone at various hours of the day and night was made at yesterday’s meeting of the P.B. Electric Power Board by Mr. J. H. Hall. A similar suggestion had been acted on recently by the Wairarapa Power Board, said Mr. Hall. The managingsecretary, Mr. R. P. Baigent, stated that in Gisborne the power house dealt with all telephone fault calls. The particular faultsman on duty at that time was then telephoned. This was not the case in the Wairarapa where there was no central reporting point. In this case there was provision in the award for the wives of faultsmen to receive some recompense for their answering of the telephone. If the board were to grant the bonus it would create a very dangerous precedent, said Mr. F. lolerton. No action was taken by the board.
