ROYAL SHOW FINANCES ABOVE EXPECTATIONS

(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 16. Despite'the boisterous weather yesterday for People’s Day the Royal Show day’s takings were a record for the Southland association, being approximately £7 10s more than the previous record year, 1946, and £l3 more than the Royal Show held here in 1939. The first day’s takings were almost up to the previous year’s, so that with an additional day’s support today the financial side of the fixture should not prove such an embarrassment to the society as the adverse weather appeared to indicate.

The second People’s Day today is likely to attract a large attendance, though cold, wintry weather with occasional rain may keep many away, especially • from country districts where several roads have become impassable* owing to the flooded state of the rivers Among the features of the show today are a repetition of the grand parade of stock and the final of the jumping championship, also the completion of the judging in the Clydesdales working draughts and trades displays which were postponed yesterday on account of the state of the grounds. Championships awarded today were: Harness Horse: C. S. Elm’s Timaru Adorian; reserve, Misses F. and M. Walker’s Outram Modern Maid.

Clydesdales.—Champion entire: J. S Anderson’s Waimatku Mac’s Crest.
