SOVIET TO RETURN U.S. WARSHIPS LOANED FOR WAR

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15,

The Soviet Union has agreed to return to the United States three icebreakers and 28 frigates supplied to the Soviet under lend-lease during the Second World War, said the actingSecretary of State, Mr. Robert Lovett. The Russian agreement was in response to several Notes which the American Government sent to the Soviet.

The United States had sought since 1946 to obtain the return of the vessels. Russia had never refused in so many words to return the ships, but had repeatedly stalled on the United States request.
