ONLY WOMAN SWIMMER FIRST HOME IN SURF RACE OFF WAIKANAE

A good surf rolling off Waikanae Beach provided testing conditions for the two week-end race events conducted by the surf section of the Gisborne Amateur Swimming Club. In the progressive contest confined to club members for the De Costa Cup, the race was over a course of about 700yds. and in the field of 15, the only woman competitor, Miss N. Broome, was first home. Miss Broome, a former resident of Wellington, was the runner-up last season in the Port Nicholson open harbour race for the Tcck Shield.

The conclusion of the series of open races drew 10 competitors. Surf Handicap, De Costa Cup, about 700yds.—Miss N. Broome (lSOsec.), 1; L. Clarke <4osee.), 2; 1. Butler (70sec.), 3; T. McDonald <l4oscc.), 4. Fifteen started. Time, 9min. 45sec.
