WOMEN BOWLERS
The opening of the Riverside Women's Bowling Club, Gisborne, took place last Saturday under boisterous weather conditions. There was a good gathering of both visitors and members, who were welcomed by the president, Mrs. V. Coker.
Sprays of flowers were presented to Mrs. P. Mackay, past secretary and to Mrs. C. Turbitt, former treasurer, Mrs. Coker, Mrs. C. Harries, treasurer, and Mrs. B. Sheppard-Wilson, secretary. The Gisborne and P.B. Bowling Clubs were represented respectively by Messrs. li. F. Wise and Wellan, both of whom congratulated the club on the condition of the green and the surroundings. Mr. Wise remarked that he was proud to be one of those who had helped to obtain the site on which the green had been prepared. Mention of the excellent work done by members was made by Mr. E. E. Somerville who also praised the condition of the green. The Borough Council’s recent allotment of a piece of land adjoining the present grounds was referred to by the president, who said that it was available for use when the necessity for extension arose. She especially thanked the small band of men who had worked every week-end to get the green and surroundings in order. On their behalf, Mr. A. Baker replied. The green was oflicially opened when the president sent down the first bowl, scoring the traditional "toucher.” Afternoon tea was served by the committee and Mrs. Coker cut the birthday cake. Music was supplied by the Home Guard Band, the members of which were thanked for their attendance by Mrs. Coker.
In the Labour Day tournament, in which nine teams took part, the winner’s were Mesdames Ivess, SheppardWilson and Blair (skip);
