Public Servants Press For Salaries Increase

(P.A.) PALMERSTON N„ Oct. 19. At a meeting of 300 public servants last night strong dissatisfaction was expressed that the review undertaken by the Committee on Margins and Anomalies in the public service had not yet resulted in service salaries being brought into line with rates outside the service. It was resolved that the national executive be urged to press the Government to give immediate effect to the demand of the Wellington section that automatic promotion for basic grade clerks be raised to £485 per annum, with appropriate increases for other sections of the service. it was also resolved that the national executive be urged again to press the Government to give the service a system of arbitration, such as other groups of workers had had for years, by setting up a public service tribunal as requested by the 1947 and 1948 conferences - of the association. Local M.P.'s to be approached by a delegation with a view to a discussion on public service salaries.

The association’s general secretary, Mr. J. Turnbull, and the national vicepresident, Mr. G. H. Sorrell, were in attendance.
