POWER BREAKDOWN CAUSES CHAOS IN DAIRY INDUSTRY
(P.A.) DARGAVILLE, Oct. 18. Milking herds of cows ranging in size from GO to 120 by hand, separating thousands of gallons of milk by the same outdated methods, feeding pigs and calves in the moonlight and trudging wearily to their homes at 1C.30 p in. were some of the hardships experienced by many Northern Wairoa dairy farmers yesterday when a breakdown in a transformer at the State Hvdro - Electric department’s substation at Maungatapere caused a power failure between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. In some cases it meant all hands to the shed,, wives and in-laws included, with difficulties being increased by the fact that cows in some herds disliked being milked by hand and played up to such an extent that the limits of patience were severely extended. “It could not have occurred at a worse time of the season,” commented one farmer, who said that cows at this time of the year were producing almost to capacity. Church services in Dargaville were also affected. Some were conducted in total darkness and others by improvised lighting.
