Dominions’ Share In Commonwealth Defence
LONDON (By Airmail)
The Economist, commenting on recent defence moves in Australia and Canada says these are welcome signs of the willingness of the Dominions to take a greater share in the defence of the Commonwealth.
Both Canada and Australia occupy strategic positions in the world and their ability to defend themselves will relieve Britain of a burden. it can no longer bear.
“Welcome as are these signs of increasing responsibility of the Dominions for their own defence and the development of regional defence pacts there is still lack of central direction of Commonwealth defence as a whole,” says the newspaper. The Economist adds: “The abolition of the Imperial Defence Committee at the. end of the war has left a gap which needs to be filled although the training of staff officers and the development of technical equipment is coordinated. The higher direction of defence. strategy is still left to the individual Dominion Governments. The notable exception is the co-ordin-ation of Canadian defence policy with that of the United States.”
